How to Apply Peroxide to Ligthen Hair

Bleach, while it does an effective job at lightening the hair, can be very drying and even damaging. Rather than using bleach to lighten your locks, try hydrogen peroxide. One of biggest drawback of lightening hair with peroxide instead of bleach, is that the bleach works in one application, while peroxide takes many. Hydrogen peroxide can be purchased from most grocery stores and drugstores. Store the peroxide in a cool dark place to keep it working at its full potential. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Comb through the hair, removing any knots or tangles. The hair does not need to be clean to lighten it.

    • 2

Pour the 3 percent hydrogen peroxide into the dark spray bottle. If you have damaged or brittle hair, dilute the hydrogen peroxide with water. The ratio of hydrogen peroxide to water should be 1:1.

    • 3

Squirt the hydrogen peroxide over your entire hair. If you wish to only lighten a few areas, only saturate those sections. You can add hydrogen peroxide to a cotton ball, and rub the cotton ball over your roots to help lighten them.

    • 4

Comb through the hair once more to evenly distribute the peroxide. Let the hair dry completely before washing with a conditioning shampoo. Because peroxide can dry the hair, a moisturizing conditioner will help to keep it looking its best.

    • 5

Repeat the process once a day until the hair reaches the desired color.

Tips & Warnings

  • To quicken the lightening process, apply the hydrogen peroxide then sit in the sun until it dries.

  • Peroxide works best on already light hair.
