How to Make Monster Hair Out of Yarn

How to Make Monster Hair Out of Yarn thumbnail
You can find specialty yarns at craft stores.

If you are making a stuffed monster or a sock puppet monster, add a head full of yarn hair to give him an appearance that is more friendly than spooky. You can use any type of yarn, but specialty fuzzy and chenille yarns create an extra playful look. Choose bright unnatural hair colors, such as purple, pink or orange, for a monster that is sillier than he is scary.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 36-inch piece of thread and push one end of the thread through the eye of the sewing needle. Pull the thread until there is an even amount of thread on both sides of the needle. Knot the two thread ends together.

    • 2

Push the tip of the needle through the fabric at the top right side of the monster's head. Pull the needle all the way through the fabric until the knot rests against the fabric. The hair will conceal the knot.

    • 3

Pull a 12-inch segment of yarn out of the yarn skein. Push the tip of the sewing needle through the loose end of the yarn. Push the yarn down on the needle tip until it is against the eye of the needle.

    • 4

Hold the needle in your dominant hand and use your nondominant hand to wrap seven 1-inch-long loops of yarn around the needle.

    • 5

Press the needle horizontally across the top of the monster's head with the eye of the needle at the top right of the monster's head and the point of the needle pointing to the left. Press the loops of yarn that are wrapped around the needle against the monster's head with your nondominant hand.

    • 6

Keep your nondominant hand pressed against the yarn loops and the monster's head. Use your dominant hand to slowly back the needle out of the loops until the tip of the needle points just beyond the final loop of yarn. Push the tip of your needle into and back out of the monster's head to create a small 1-mm long stitch.

    • 7

Keep your nondominant hand pressed against the yarn loops and the monster's head and use your dominant hand to slowly pull the needle and thread all the way through the 1-mm-long stitch. The seven loops of yarn should now be stitched firmly to the monster's head. Release your nondominant hand from the yarn loops.

    • 8

Repeat the process of wrapping yarn loops around the needle and securing the loops to the monster's head with 1-mm-long stitches until the monster has the amount of hair desired.

    • 9

Cut a 5-inch tail of yarn beyond the final sewn-down loops. Tie the loose end of yarn and the remaining length of thread into a tight double knot that lies against the monster's head. Cut and discard the yarn and thread extending beyond the double knot.
