Plastic lace, also called gimp or boondoggle, is a safe, entertaining craft for children. It can be used to make bracelets, necklaces, key chains and zipper pulls. It is relatively inexpensive and comes in a variety of bright colors. Once your child masters the simpler stitches, he or she can move on to make quite a number of creative projects with different types of braiding techniques.

Step 1

Cut a length of about two yards of each color. For example, cut two yards of red lace and two yards of blue.

Step 2

Find the middle of each piece and place the red strand on top of the blue so that they cross at the middle point of each.

Step 3

Hold the overlapping pieces in one hand. Make a loop around your index finger with the blue strand so that both ends go over the top of your finger, with the red strand going through the center of the loop.

Step 4

Weave one end of the red strand over the first blue strand on top of your finger and under the second.

Step 5

Weave the red strand back again, going over then under the blue strands on your finger. Pull the strands tight to make the first link.

Step 6

Repeat weaving the red and blue strands together, continuing the over-under pattern across the loops until a chain begins to form. Weave the chain as long as you like.

Step 7

Cut each end so you can tie the bracelet together.
