How to Make a Drywall Seam
After you hang sheets of drywall to form solid walls and ceilings, you have to cover the seams between the sheets of drywall with a special tape and then with a special plaster called joint compound. The compound covers the joints and flattens the tape so the wall looks like one solid piece. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Paper drywall tape
- Joint compound
- 6-inch drywall knife
- 10-inch drywall knife
- Drywall sander
Instructions

1
Spread a thin line of joint compound over the seam between the two sheets of drywall, from one end to the other, using your 6-inch drywall knife.
-
2
Press a strip of paper tape into the compound, covering the seam from end to end.
-
-
3
Spread joint compound over the tape with the 6-inch knife, covering it completely. Scrape the knife flat over the surface to flatten it about, squeezing away the excess compound from above and below the tape.
-
4
Allow the compound to set for six hours. Spread on a second layer of compound with the 10-inch drywall knife, making the seam about 2 inches wider than the first seam.
-
5
Let the compound set for six hours. Apply a third layer, again with the 10-inch drywall knife, making the seam about 2 inches wider. Let it set for 12 to 24 hours.
-
6
Sand the compound flat with your pad sander.
