How to Make a Solid Lotion Stick

How to Make a Solid Lotion Stick thumbnail
Use essential oils to scent your lotion sticks.

Lotion sticks are convenient tools for moisturizing on the go. Making the solid lotion bar at home is easily done with materials that are available at most craft stores. The ingredients include natural waxes and oils. Keep the ingredients natural by using essential oils, rather than fragrance oils, for adding scent. The containers for the lotion bars are empty deodorant tubes that can be purchased at beauty supply stores. The tubes feature a twist-up dial and a close-fitting cap that make it easy to apply the lotion stick.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the lower portion of the double boiler with water and heat the water to a simmer on the stove. Fit on the upper portion of the double boiler. Place 1 1/2 ounces of beeswax in the upper pan and allow it to melt, increasing heat gradually to speed up the process.

    • 2

Add in 1 ounce mango butter and allow it to become close to fully melted. Remove the pans from the heat, then pull the top pan off. Set the water pan off to the side. Add in 1/2 ounce each of almond, jojoba and hemp oils. Stir until well combined.

    • 3

Use a small eyedropper to add drops of essential oils to the mix. Pause after every third drop to stir and check the intensity of the scent.

    • 4

Pour the wax mixture into the 8 small deodorant tubes. Leave the caps off the tubes. Set the tubes aside overnight in a cool, dry place. Check that the lotion has become solid the next day before putting on the caps. Label the tubes with a name and ingredients for the lotion sticks, as well as the date they were made.
