1
Trace a pair of old slippers that fit you well onto patterning or tracing paper. Trace twice more so you have three sets of "feet" tracing.
-
2
Cut out your tracings, cutting about 1/2 inch out from the line for seam allowance. Pin the patterning paper to your fabric, and cut out the fabric carefully. Unpin the fabric from the paper after cutting.
-
-
3
Cut a small, narrow U out of the center of one pair of the foot tracings so you're left with a long, narrow horseshoe. Place the fabric on top of your foot to see how much of the top of your foot the slipper covers. Cut more from the U to expose more of the top of your foot, or if you're making Mary Jane-style slippers.
-
4
Cut two strips of fabric measuring the width of the top of your foot, long enough to lay the strip over and make a strap, if you're making Mary Jane-style slippers.
-
5
Place the two remaining sets of "feet" atop one another, wrong sides facing out. Sew around the perimeter, leaving enough room at the heel end to slip stuffing or an insole inside. Turn the sewn piece right side out. Leave the end open. Repeat for the other foot.
-
6
Place the u-shaped slipper top on the sole, right side down. Sew the top to the sole, around the perimeter, leaving the back open. Flip the slipper so the top is right-side out. Slip a trimmed insole, batting or cotton into the sole's opening to add cushion. Smooth the filling, or adjust the insole for proper fit and evenness. Repeat on the other slipper.
-
7
Sew the backs of the soles closed by hand. Sew the back of the top of the slipper closed by hand as well.
-
8
Hand-stitch the fabric straps onto the tops of your slippers if you're making Mary Jane-type slippers. Stitch one end of the flap to the top-side of the slipper on its out-step. Hot glue a snap or Velcro to the other side of the strap and the instep. Repeat with the other slipper.
-
9
Embellish your slippers as desired.
