How to Make a Vest With Tuxedo Lapels
Though tuxedo jackets are classically formal, they can be hot, stuffy and uncomfortable. Vests allow for a better air circulation and are just a bit more casual than the traditional tuxedo jacket. And, once tuxedo lapels are added to a vest, it become just a bit more formal, crossing the line between jacket and ordinary vest.

1
Take your measurements using measuring tape. Loop the tape snugly around your waist, your chest and your shoulders. Keep these measurements with you when searching for a vest pattern.
-
2
Choose a vest pattern you like which includes lapels. On the back of the pattern, locate the sizing and match the size to the measurements your took. Choose a fabric you like. For vests, lighter fabrics, such as denim and cotton, work well, but if you want your vest to be more like a tuxedo jacket, try heavier fabrics.

3
Open your pattern and cut out the pieces. If you chose a simple vest pattern, you may only have a few pieces, such as a back piece, two front pieces and two lapel pieces.
-
4
Lay out your fabric on a flat surface. Spread the pattern pieces over the fabric and pin the pattern pieces in place. Cut out the fabric using the pattern pieces as templates.
-
5
Stitch the pieces of fabric together. The lapel pieces should be stitched onto the collar of the vest with the grains of the fabric running in the same direction. Iron or steam the vest to get the vest and the lapels to fall nicely. Try on the vest and make adjustments, such as taking it in or readjusting some seams, if necessary. Create button holes with your scissors, thread and a needle and stitch the buttons on. Try on the vest again, this time, buttoned up.
