How to Make an Oval Tablecloth With Two Pieces of Fabric

Making an oval tablecloth is more challenging than making a square or rectangular cloth. Oval shapes have no flat edges, which can make them difficult to cut and sew. If you have a larger table, you probably will have to join two pieces of fabric to make the tablecloth wide enough to fit over the table correctly. You can also sew two different types of fabric together to make a different style of tablecloth.

  • Fabric 48 inches wide
  • Washing machine

Instructions

    • 1

Wash and dry the fabric pieces to preshrink the fabric. Iron both pieces to remove any wrinkles.

    • 2

Place the two cloth pieces over the table. Mark the outline of the oval table around the edges of the fabric. Remove the fabric from the table.

    • 3

Measure out 7 inches from the chalk line on the tablecloth. Draw a second oval at this point around the original oval.

    • 4

Cut out the oval shape along the outer line. Place the two pieces of fabric together along the seam line. Sew the two pieces together using a ½ inch seam allowance.

    • 5

Place the tablecloth over the table again. Trim any areas where the cloth hangs unevenly.

    • 6

Sew the bottom edge of the tablecloth with a serger machine to prevent the edges from fraying.
