How to Hook Up a Double Monitor for a Computer

Dual monitor setups let you view your Windows desktop across two monitors. Most newer video cards include two ports for monitors, and each monitor includes a cable, so you only need to purchase the monitor to set up dual-monitor work space. After you connect the monitor to the computer, you must configure Windows to display the desktop across the two devices.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect both monitors to the ports on the back of your computer on the video card. If you do not have the first monitor connected, use a VGA cable to connect to the card's VGA port, or a DVI cable to link to the DVI ports on the card and monitor. Likewise, connect the second monitor using a DVI cable or VGA cable. Monitors come with a VGA cable, and in some cases a DVI cable is also provided.

    • 2

Power on the computer. You can connect a monitor with the computer turned off or on.

    • 3

Right-click the Windows desktop and select "Personalize." This shortcut opens your monitor settings directly.

    • 4

Click "Extend These Displays" in the "Multiple Monitors" drop-down. Click "OK" to save the settings. The Windows desktop extends to both of your monitors.
