Attach a patio awning to your home and extend it out to cover your patio on hot days. A number of patio awnings are available commercially, including ones with remote controls and automatic operation. These can be installed either professionally or by the homeowner according to the manufacturer's instructions, depending on which model you purchase.

Set up a large patio umbrella with an offset base. Place the base in one corner of the patio, then crank the umbrella out to cover your patio. Look for a patio umbrella with a swivel so you can move it around to provide shade throughout the day.

Set up a portable canopy on your patio and move it around as needed to provide shade during the day. These portable pop-up canopies are easy to set up, and they can double as party tents for backyard barbecues and get togethers. You can find canopies with screened sides as well, providing protection from insects and wind as well as the sun.
