How to Frost Graying Hair

Adding frosting to gray hair gives hair a youthful appearance.

Gray hair is a color most women try to avoid. However, coloring gray hair completely is time-consuming and can be expensive. One way to add a touch of elegance to gray hair without using a full color dye is to add silver-blonde frosting to gray hair. These lighter streaks brighten naturally gray hair, and give it a polished appearance without all the trouble of regular dye. Frosting works with any color, but looks best with silvery or blond tones.

Things You'll Need

• Shampoo
• Towel
• Comb
• Frosting cap
• Crochet hook
• Powdered lightener
• Color developer
• Plastic gloves
• Plastic cape
• Plastic shower cap
• Conditioner

Instructions

1. Wash the hair as normal, using a regular shampoo. Dry with a towel, but leave it slightly damp. Comb the hair to remove any tangles.

2. Put on a frosting cap. Pull small pieces of hair through the holes in the cap with a crochet hook. Pull the hair through, one row at a time, so you do not miss any holes. You want the frosting to be evenly distributed throughout the hair.

3. Mix one part powder with one part developer in a small bow. Put on plastic gloves. Drape a plastic cape over your shoulders to prevent the dye from getting onto clothing.

4. Paint the color onto the exposed hair with the included brush. When all the hair is saturated with the dye mixture, place a plastic shower cap over the head.

5. Allow the dye to set for 30 minutes. Check for the desired color. If you want the hair lighter, allow the dye to set for 20 minutes more.

6. Remove the top cap. Rinse the dyed hair before removing the second cap. Remove the second cap and wash and condition the hair as normal. Dry and style the hair as normal.
