How to Make a Professional Photography Portfolio

Photographers make their living by capturing the world around them in a visually appealing manner. Put this same care into assembling a portfolio that will display your work and help you gain clients. Write a short bio that states who you are, how you got into photography and tells potential clients about your artistic philosophy. Your artistic philosophy is a statement that will typically let readers know what you try to capture when you take photographs. Include a resume with this bio that lists your photographic experience in chronological order.

Place 8-by-10 images in your portfolio that cover a range of subject matter. There's no way to include every photograph you've ever taken, so collect a representative sample. Select between five and 10 images that include landscape, portrait and artistic photographs to demonstrate your range. A mix of both color photography and black-and-white is the best approach. Include relevant tear sheets if you have them. Tear sheets are pages from magazines or advertisements that feature your work. Place your photographs in plastic protector sleeves with three holes along the left side..

Put your photographs in a leather or faux leather three-ring binder for presentation. Make sure the binder has pockets for copies of your bio, resume and business cards. Place your photograph sleeves on the rings so potential clients can easily flip through them when considering whether or not to hire you.
