The hockey stop is the quickest way to stop while skiing. Use this on telemark skis as a general method to stop and in emergencies when a quick stop is vital.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Clothing
  • Telemark Ski Equipment
  1. Step 1

Find a groomed or smooth hill without obstacles to practice on.

  2. Step 2

Point the skis downhill and gain some speed.

  3. Step 3

    Flex your knees.

  4. Step 4

Flex your ankles forward into your boots.

  5. Step 5

Steer both skis abruptly sideways to the hill while keeping your upper body position facing downhill. Steer your feet by rotating your hips, knees and ankles in the direction you want to go.

  6. Step 6

Weight the big-toe side of your downhill foot and the little-toe side of your uphill foot while steering to quickly turn sideways.

  7. Step 7

Push both your knees and ankles down and out toward the downhill side and come to a skidding halt.

Tips & Warnings
  • Watch a game of hockey; it's the same method of stopping a hockey player uses.
  • This move can be used while skiing in either alpine or telemark style.
  • You will know you've got it when a cloud of snow is sprayed downhill with each stop.
