So many winter sports, so little time. Here's how to decide between snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and telemark skiing.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Nordic Skis
  • Snowshoes
  • Telemark Ski Equipment
  1. Step 1

Have a price tag in your head of how much you want to spend on winter recreation gear. Snowshoeing is generally cheaper than skiing.

  2. Step 2

Consider level of difficulty. Snowshoeing is least difficult to perform where telemark skiing is the most difficult.

  3. Step 3

Decide how much time you would like to spend learning a new activity. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are easy to learn and telemark skiing takes more time to learn.

  4. Step 4

Choose the type of terrain you'd like to explore. For example, consider skiing in areas with long descents and snowshoeing in areas of tight trees where maneuverability is key.

  5. Step 5

Think about how far you would like to travel through the snow. Most often, skiing will take you further than snowshoeing in the same amount of time.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try telemark skiing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing before you decide which sport to pursue. Most ski stores and ski resorts will rent all three sets of equipment.
