How to Perform a Wave Hands Like Clouds Movement in Tai Chi

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Face forward with your left foot about two paces in front of your right foot.

  2. Step 2

    Raise your hands with the palms forward about head level.

  3. Step 3

    Lean back on your right leg and lift your left toes.

  4. Step 4

    Pivot your left foot on the heel and turn the toes to the left while turning your upper body to the left.

  5. Step 5

    Circle your right hand in a clockwise direction from the top to the bottom of its circle and shift your weight to your right leg.

  6. Step 6

    Circle your left hand in a counterclockwise direction downward as the right hand comes up in front of you.

  7. Step 7

    Step in with your right foot and bring your feet together while your right hand comes to the top and your left hand reaches bottom.

  8. Step 8

    Circle your right hand down as your left hand comes up in front of you. Shift your weight to your right leg.

  9. Step 9

    Step to the left with your left foot while your left hand reaches top and your right hand reaches bottom.

  10. Step 10

    Circle your left hand down as your right hand comes up in front of you. Shift your weight to your left leg.

  11. Step 11

    Repeat steps 7 through 10 above.

  12. Step 12

    Step to the right with your right foot while your right hand reaches top and your left hand reaches bottom.

  13. Step 13

    Shift your weight to your right leg and step in with your left as your right hand goes down to bottom and your left hand comes up to the top.

  14. Step 14

    Shift your weight to your right leg as your right hand comes up in front of you and your left hand goes down.

  15. Step 15

    Step to the right with your right foot as your right hand comes to the top and your left hand reaches bottom.

  16. Step 16

    Step in with your left foot as your right hand circles to the bottom and your left hand circles to the top.

  17. Step 17

    Shift your weight to your left leg and step out with your right as your right hand comes up and your left hand goes down.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider the movement of your hands as wheels: Your right hand will always wave in a clockwise circle and your left hand will always move in a counterclockwise circle.
  • Keep your breathing deep and coordinated with movements.
  • Practice the exercises slowly and without tension to increase the flow of "chi," your life energy. The results will calm the mind and benefit mental health.
