How to Perform a Leg Swing Exercise in Tai Chi

The leg-swing exercise is one of nine exercises practiced by Asian monks and nuns to promote physical and spiritual well-being. Today the exercises are practiced for health and as a warm-up for tai chi.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tai Chi Medidation Music
  • Martial Arts Supplies
  • Martial Arts Uniforms
  • Tai Chi Videos
  1. Step 1

    Face forward and place your feet together.

  2. Step 2

    Turn your left foot at a 45-degree angle.

  3. Step 3

    Keep your arms relaxed at your sides. Also keep your shoulders relaxed and your back straight.

  4. Step 4

    Bend your right knee slightly and swing your right leg forward to about waist level.

  5. Step 5

    Make a downward swing back through the middle and continue the swing behind you, like a pendulum.

  6. Step 6

    Focus on the swing as one fluid movement and repeat several times.

  7. Step 7

    Switch legs and repeat the movement an equal number of times.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember to perform a leg swing, not a kick. The movement is relaxed, the leg swinging like a pendulum.
  • According to tai chi belief, the leg-swing exercise helps to eliminate indigestion and constipation.
  • Practice the exercises slowly and without tension to increase the flow of "chi" - your life energy. The results will calm the mind and benefit mental health.
