Sleds are classic toys for winter fun and now come in a variety of designs.

From Quick Guide: Sledding
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Flexible Plastic Sleds
  • Plastic Oblong Sled
  • Plastic Saucer Sled
  • Sleds With Backrests
  • Toboggans
  • Wooden Sleds With Metal Rails
  • Wooden Sleds With Wooden Rails
  1. Step 1

Understand that there are many types of sleds available for children. There are plastic sliders, plastic saucers, inflatable plastic sleds, wooden sleds and flexible plastic snow sheets.

  2. Step 2

Know that plastic, oblong sleds and saucers (which are round) are generally the most popular choices. They cost under $20. Flexible snow sheets can be rolled up for easy storage. These cost under $10. They may, however, be difficult to stay on. Inflatable sleds may be the most comfortable and can be purchased for $20 and up.

  3. Step 3

Realize that wooden sleds with metal or wooden rails are the most expensive options. Sleds of these types begin at around $50. They are quite attractive as a front porch decoration in the winter.

  4. Step 4

Recognize that sleds come in various lengths. The shorter ones begin at about 42 inches and can hold a small child. Larger sleds can hold up to three small children.

  5. Step 5

Look for sleds with backrests for babies and children with special needs.

  6. Step 6

Make sure the sled has a pull rope so you can pull the kids back up to the top of the hill. Handles for the riders are also an important feature.

  7. Step 7

Avoid sleds with sharp edges, as little hands can get scraped.

  8. Step 8

Be careful using sleds with metal rails. These are the most dangerous kind and can cause injury if people are hit or run over.

Tips & Warnings
  • It may make more sense to purchase a large sled at a local store since the shipping for such large items can be expensive.
  • Buy a toboggan if you want to be able to go downhill as a family. Some toboggans will hold up to six people.
