Step 1
Think about what a teenager can use: pens, a day-planner, a key chain, a calculator, a package of cool Post-it notes.
-
Step 2
Choose things that you know she will use, such as a pre-paid phone card, an address book, software, a camera and film, a journal, or a portable CD player.
-
Step 3
Look for things that are fun - a Pez dispenser, battery-operated games, gift certificates for CDs, books or clothing, or tickets to a theme park, movie theater or sporting event.
-
Step 4
Consider items that will come in handy: perfume, an electric toothbrush, bookmarks, sunglasses, a watch, small magnetic picture frames, or a wallet.
-
Step 5
Try hair accessories, scented soaps, cosmetics, earrings, nail polish and makeup brushes.
-
Step 6
Find a magazine she'd be interested in and order a subscription for her. Stick a note in her stocking to let her know.
-
Step 7
Keep in mind that cash is always appreciated.
-
Step 8
Think about what she likes to collect, and add a few items to her set.

on 8/16/2006 Don't underestimate the value of just giving cash! I can't speak for everyone, but I definitely know that I won't be wailing in a corner over how impersonal it is.
Besides, it great especially for those without a job. Trust me, I'd rather have a $5 bill than something I can't possibly find a use for.
Under cash, gift cards are next in line. But please don't get it for a store that is a quest to get to. I personally don't like gift cards because I don't get out much. Oh, and if they drive, buying them a nice full tank of gas wouldn't hurt.
If you're thinking starts heading toward scented soaps and lotions, please backtrack. My mom, friend, and I have lotions all over the place. Don't give them unless there is a kind you know they really, really like.
Other gift ideas, in no particular order:
- Mp3 player (you can find plenty of cheap and effective ones by avoiding iPod)
- DVD for a movie they like
- Nice jewelry (though taste in earrings can vary a lot, you might want to go with something safer like bracelets, necklaces, etc.)
-Concert tickets
- Cell Phone accessories
- Digital Camera (they aren't all $300 dollars)
- Little cartoon themed stuff from cartoons they still like (we can have kid moments too...*hugs Scooby Doo*)
- Reading lamp for those avid readers
*You should definitely think about their likes and dislikes.
**Asking can't hurt either, though some of us sincerely don't know what we want.

on 8/8/2006 As a teenage girl myself, I know one thing: Teens sure don't want Pez dispensers. Give her something cute or a secret joke between you guys. Once she feels important and remembered, the rest will follow.

on 12/16/2005 I am a teenage girl, and one of the things I love getting is gift cards, because (a) it gives me another excuse to go shopping, and (b) it gives me more confidence in spending my money (just buy it already).
Another thing is, since now CDs are a little outdated, an iTunes gift card would be great.

on 1/2/2006 Being a teenager, I love the gifts that reflect my personality. I love the color pink, and most of the gifts I receive are pink. Also, gift cards to my favorite stores are gifts I love. Don't give something generic. Give something that you know they will like.
Hints: If you can, go into her room. Take a look around and take time to notice the posters on her walls, or CDs she has lying around. If she has an IPOD find a cute case. Greatest Hits CDs are fun. She would probably die if you found concert tickets to her favorite band. So think logically and think personal. For me I want my gifts to be something I don't have to ask for, but something the gift-giver thinks of and is perfect.
Purses are fun, but too many can clutter a girls closet. If you get her one, make sure it's special (not the generic black bag) and no one else in the family is getting her one.

on 12/8/2005 Skip the gift buying because they get whatever they want throughout the year. Why not help out a needy family.
