Step 1
Use a leash on the camera to safely carry it. The best material to use for a leash is 3mm Perlon rope.

Find an attachment point on the camera body and tie the leash to the camera with a good knot, such as a figure 8 follow through.

Make sure the leash is about three feet long so you can reach your face with the leash tied to your harness.

Note that most small-format cameras come with a camera bag. Try to find one with some amount of padding.

Attach the bag to the outside of the waist strap on your harness. If you keep it just to the right of the buckle, it won't get in the way of the gear loops on your hip.

Stuff the excess leash into the camera bag, then stuff the camera in the bag and close it, once the camera bag's attached and the leashed is tied off.

Understand that if you're using a large-format SLR, it's not going to fit in a small camera bag on your hip. Sling the camera strap around neck and slip your arm though the strap. Then slide the camera around to your back. Be prepared for the camera to get hammered.
