How to Select a Template in PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint includes several presentation templates you can use for automatic slide backgrounds.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Open PowerPoint.

  2. Step 2

    Click the Template radio button in the PowerPoint window, then click OK.

  3. Step 3

    Select either the Presentations or Presentation Designs tab.

  4. Step 4

    Select one of the templates and preview it to see if you want to use it, then select OK.

  5. Step 5

    Select the slide layout you want to use and design your presentation.

Tips & Warnings
  • A template is the background applied to all your slides, while the layout is the arrangement of objects on that background - title, bulleted lists, charts, pictures. Any layout can be applied to any template.
  • If you are already working in PowerPoint, go to the File menu and select New, then begin with step 3 above.
  • Select a layout for each new slide you add to the presentation; use the first layout you pick only for the first slide.
  • You can change the template applied to a presentation by opening the Format menu and choosing Apply Design Template, then selecting the template you want and clicking OK.
