A cervical cap is a latex, dome-shaped device that is inserted into the vagina and fits snugly over the cervix. With the help of spermicidal gel, it provides a barrier to block sperm from entering the uterus and prevents fertilization.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Fill the dome of the cap 1/3 full of spermicide.

  2. Step 2

    Find a comfortable position.

  3. Step 3

    Locate your cervix.

  4. Step 4

Separate the labia with one hand and squeeze the cap rim together with the other hand.

  5. Step 5

Hold the cap dome-side-down, slide it into the vagina, and push it up and onto the cervix.

  6. Step 6

Press the rim into place on the cervix, pinch the rounded end to create suction, then twist the cap.

  7. Step 7

Run a finger around the edge of the cap to ensure that the cervix is completely covered and that there are no gaps whatsoever.

Tips & Warnings
  • To remove, push the rim away from the cervix to break the suction and pull the cap out.
  • Cap must stay in place eight hours after intercourse.
  • Wash the cap with soap after removal.
  • Buy a new cap every two years.
  • A diaphragm does not offer protection against sexually transmitted diseases. Unless both you and your partner have been tested for STDs, consider using a condom in addition to the diaphragm.
  • Do not leave the cap in place for longer than 48 hours.
  • Do not use cap if you are experiencing vaginal bleeding.
