A diaphragm is a shallow, dome-shaped rubber disk with a flexible rim that fits within the vagina. It covers the cervix and, with the help of spermicidal gel, prevents sperm from reaching the cervix and uterus.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Mild Soap Such As Dishwashing Liquid

Step1
Confer with a physician or nurse practitioner to get measured for the appropriate size diaphragm and to get a prescription.
Step2
Buy diaphram and contraceptive ointment from pharmacy.
Step3
Wash hands with soap and hot water.
Step4
Dab contraceptive cream, foam or jelly in the diaphragm cup and spread it around the rim.
Step5
Find a comfortable position such as standing with one foot up on a chair, sitting at the edge of a chair or squatting.
Step6
Separate the labia with fingers of one hand and pinch the rim of the diaphragm with the other, folding it in half.
Step7
Place index finger in center of fold for a firmer grip.
Step8
Push diaphragm as far up and back into the vagina as possible.
Step9
Secure diaphragm behind the pubic bone.
Step10
Make sure the cervix is covered.
Step11
Wash hands again with soap and hot water.

Tips & Warnings

  • Insert the diaphragm several hours before intercourse and leave in place 6-8 hours after intercourse.
  • For repeated intercourse, leave diaphragm in place but insert more contraceptive cream or jelly.
  • Make sure the contraceptive cream or jelly is inside the fold of the diaphragm.
  • A diaphragm does not offer protection against sexually transmitted diseases. Unless both you and your partner have been tested for STDs, consider using a condom in addition to the diaphragm.
  • Do not substitute petroleum jelly or cold cream for the contraceptive cream. They do not have contraceptive qualities, thus reducing the effectiveness of the diaphragm, and they can damage the rubber as well.
  • Do not leave diaphragm in your vagina for more than 24 hours.
  • Do not use the diaphragm during menstruation.
