The Windows Registry is absolutely essential to run Windows 95 and 98. It contains all system settings, user preferences, and program information. Although the system automatically backs up the Registry every time Windows is successfully started, you may want to perform a manual backup before installing hardware or software and definitely if you want to edit the Registry itself. The backup process differs for Windows 95 and 98.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

    Windows 95

  1. Step 1

Copy Configuration Backup from the Windows 95 installation CD (other/misc/cfgback directory) to your Windows directory.

  2. Step 2

    Click the Start menu.

  3. Step 3

    Select Run.

  4. Step 4

    Type "cfgback" and press Enter.

  5. Step 5

Follow the Configuration Backup steps to display the backup window.

  6. Step 6

Create a backup file name and click Backup.

  7. Step 7

Click Yes to confirm and begin the backup.

  8. Windows 98

  9. Step 1

    Click the Start menu.

  10. Step 2

    Select Run.

  11. Step 3

Type "scanregw" and press Enter. This command runs the Microsoft Registry Checker. It checks the current Registry for errors and asks whether you want to back up this file.

  12. Step 4

Click Yes to start the Registry backup, then click OK when the backup is complete. You do not have the option to name the backup file - it is automatically labeled (rb000.cab to rb005.cab).

Tips & Warnings
  • Scanreg saves up to five backup files. If your last two backup files are problematic, you can restore an older backup file.
  • If Windows is set up for multiple users, this backup procedure is based on the user that runs this procedure and must be restored by that user.
