How to Open the Windows Registry Editor

To edit the Windows registry, you will need to open Regedit, the Windows Registry Editor. Be sure to read the warnings below before using this procedure. The Windows Registry Editor is available in Windows 95 and Windows 98.

  • Microsoft Windows
  1. Step 1

    Click the Start menu.

  2. Step 2

    Click Run.

  3. Step 3

    Type "regedit" and click OK.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider using TweakUI, a safe and easy-to-use utility for editing the Registry.
  • Back up your Windows Registry with the cfgback.exe (Windows 95) or scanreg.exe (Windows 98) program before entering any changes into the Registry. Refer to the Related eHow for instructions on backing up the Registry.
  • Use caution when editing the Registry. Incorrect changes to this file can cripple Windows. In many cases Windows automatically replaces the corrupted registry with a good backup it has stored, but don't rely on this feature to rescue you.
