With the proper equipment and experience, unplanned challenges are a fun part of camping. Without the right gear, these challenges quickly become big problems. Practice fixing your camp lantern before you head out, and you'll be king of the campfire.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Matches Or Lighter
  • Spare Mantle
  1. Step 1

Turn the gas valve completely off.

  2. Step 2

Unscrew the lantern cover. Remove the cover and the glass globe that surrounds the mantle (see A).

  3. Step 3

Remove any remnants of the old mantle.

  4. Step 4

Tie a new mantle into place on the gas outlet pipe using the attached string (see B).

  5. Step 5

Pressurize the gas tank by operating the pump on the side of the tank. Open the pump valve by rotating the handle, cover the hole in the pump handle with your thumb, pump repeatedly, then close the valve.

  6. Step 6

Hold a lighted match or lighter near the mantle. Open the gas valve slightly. The mantle should begin to burn. Replace the glass globe and the cover.

  7. Step 7

Open the gas valve fully when the mantle glows brightly. Close the gas valve completely to shut it off.

  8. Step 8

Pressurize the gas tank regularly for best results.

Tips & Warnings
  • Spare mantles are available at camping supply stores and many hardware stores.
  • Be sure you're familiar with how your lantern operates. Improper use can cause a fire or an explosion.
  • Do not use a lantern or stove inside a tent.
