How to Replace Washers in a Lantern

Camp lanterns and camp stoves rely on air pressure to feed fuel to the burner. Safety and proper function therefore depend on airtight seals on all the fittings--that's where washers come in. A leak can result in a weak flame or dangerous gas emissions. Fixing these devices isn't hard, but be prepared to safely deal with spilled fuel. There are usually two rubber washers on a lantern or a stove. One ensures an airtight seal around the gas cap. The other seals the gas valve, which you use to control gas flow to the burner or mantle.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small Knife
  • Adjustable Wrench
  • Replacement Washer(s)
  1. Step 1

    Remove the gas cap.

  2. Step 2

Using the point of a small knife, remove the washer from inside the gas cap (see A).

  3. Step 3

Insert a replacement washer. Use the knife to press the washer firmly into place. Put the gas cap back on.

  4. Step 4

Using an adjustable wrench, remove the nut holding the gas valve in place (see B). Pull the gas valve free from the lantern or stove. Some fuel will leak during this step (see Warning).

  5. Step 5

Using the knife, remove the washer inside the gas-valve nut. Insert the replacement washer and press it into place with the knife point.

  6. Step 6

Put the gas valve back into place and tighten the nut.

  7. Step 7

Pressurize the gas tank with the lantern's pump and listen for leaks. If you hear pressure escaping, check the tightness of the gas cap and the gas-valve nut. If you cannot achieve a seal, check that the new washers are fully pushed into place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not work on a lantern or stove that is hot to the touch. Spilled fuel could ignite.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors.
