Things You'll Need:
- Marlin Spike Or Screwdriver
-
Step 1
Create as much slack as possible in the rope surrounding the knot. This will allow you maximum access to the knot.
-
Step 2
Inspect the knot. Many knots appear completely tight, but in fact have a loose section that can be used to relax the entire knot.
-
Step 3
Insert a marlin spike or a screwdriver into the loosest part of the knot. Work the tool back and forth and check for loosening.
-
Step 4
Reinsert the spike into the knot in as many places as possible. Feed loose rope into the knot by pushing it with the spike if necessary. Work carefully with the spike to avoid damaging the rope.

on 5/28/2008 With a smaller knots made of thinner strings, the best thing to do is work the knot between your thumb and forefinger to loosen it.
Use a pin to try and pick apart the strings, if your fingers still cant grip any part of the knot.
