How to Fix Your Bump Shot in Volleyball

Most people have trouble developing a consistent bump shot in volleyball. This shot, the most basic in the game, can be used to pass, set or hit the ball over the net.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Partner
  • Volleyball Court
  • Volleyball

Step1
Extend your arms straight out in front of you, perpendicular to the floor with your palms up. Lay one hand in the palm of the other and then roll your thumbs together so that you can see your two thumbnails facing up and next to each other. This creates a loose and comfortable grip for your bump shot. Now flex your arms so that you create a flat platform between your wristbones and elbows, keeping your arms straight.
Step2
Extend your elbows until they are locked. Your arms and shoulders should move as one unit. Keep your feet shoulder width apart, knees bent with weight on your toes, and stay low. You want to contact the ball at waist level, always trying to be directly behind the ball and in line with your target. Practice pivoting at the waist, not the shoulders. As you pivot to the side, raise your hands to keep the platform level.
Step3
Have a friend serve the ball over the net. Get into position early so that you are stable and directly behind the ball when it arrives. Keep your arms steady at contact and keep watching the ball until it hits your arms. Do not swing at the ball but rather gently push your shoulders and arms forward toward the target as the ball comes in contact with your arms. Practice proper positioning and form, not power.

Tips & Warnings

  • Keep one foot slightly in front of the other and transfer your weight from back to front as you contact the ball. This will give you more power and better directional control.
