By eHow Contributing Writer

The appel is a sharp foot stamp which may be used to emphasize a feint or deliver a renewed attack from the lunge with added impetus.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fencing Gear
  1. Step 1

Lift the leading foot about two and 1/2 inches above the floor.

  2. Step 2

Bring the foot down sharply, striking the floor, heel first.

Tips & Warnings
  • When using the appel to emphasize a feint, coordinate it with the completion of the feint. When using the appel in a renewed attack from the lunge, stamp the foot at the same instant that the point strikes the target.
  • Fencing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.

on 11/22/2005 This isn't exactly a tip, but just for your information, fencing is hardly dangerous when done with proper training and gear. It is actually less dangerous than high-school football. You wouldn't say that football is a naturally dangerous sport, but it is, even with padding. There have been very, very few fencing deaths in the past century, and almost all of those resulted from blades being broken while fencing and the broken blade piercing protective gear. Broken blades are usually preventable, but an overly hard tackle is much more difficult to prevent.
