To assure that your first fencing lesson will be enjoyable and beneficial, do a few things on your own to prepare yourself.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fencing Gear
  1. Step 1

Strengthen your thighs with squatting exercises.

  2. Step 2

Develop your endurance and cardiovascular fitness three or more times a week with exercises such as running or climbing for periods of 30 minutes or more.

  3. Step 3

Become familiar with first position and the guard position, the execution of the salute, the advance, the retreat, and the lunge (see Related eHows).

  4. Step 4

Arrive promptly for your lesson, allowing enough time to change into your fencing clothes.

  5. Step 5

Label your personal equipment inconspicuously for easy identification - every fencer's gear (masks, foils and gloves) looks very much alike.
