How to Swap a Faulty Light Switch

If a light switch sparks or fails to work, if it makes too much noise or if you just want to change the color or style, swapping an old switch for a new one is easy. Spend the extra money for commercial-grade switches and receptacles. They are safer and last longer. See also How to Install a New Dimmer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Switch off power to the circuit at the main service panel.

    • 2

Remove the cover plate over the switch, unscrew the switch from the box and pull it out carefully.

    • 3

Test each terminal with one lead of a neon tester and probe a metal outlet box or bare grounding wire with the other. The tester should not glow.

    • 4

Loosen or remove the screws to disconnect the insulated wires and any bare grounding wire.

    • 5

If the wires are not nicked or damaged, insert them clockwise under the same terminals on the new switch and tighten the terminal screws.

Tips & Warnings

  • Often you'll see other wires in the switch box, and they may be live. Normally you can pull out the switch and make the change while keeping well away from these wires. If not, you must test all the wires for power (see How to Troubleshoot Electrical Problems).
