Make Applesauce

Whether served warm or cold, applesauce is sweet, comforting and delicious, and is loved by babies and adults alike. It's also surprisingly easy to make at home.

Applesauce is so easy, it's great to experiment with it. Try using honey or maple syrup for the sweetener, and nutmeg or ginger for the spice.

You can use whatever apple varieties you like; McIntosh are flavorful and turn to mush exceptionally well. Combine apple varieties, too: Try two McIntosh and three Winesap, for instance.

It almost cooks itself, like magic. Makes about 3 cups.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 5 large apples
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1/4 c. apple cider
  • Groceries
  • Potato Mashers
  • Saucepans
  • Saucepans
  1. Step 1

Peel and seed the apples; chop into quarters or eighths.

  2. Step 2

Put the apples and cider or water in a saucepan and set on low to medium-low heat. Cover.

  3. Step 3

After 20 minutes, remove the cover and mash the apples. They should practically disintegrate into sauce, with maybe a few lumps for texture.

  4. Step 4

    Add the sugar and cinnamon.

  5. Step 5

    Serve warm or chilled.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add more sugar if it's not sweet enough for you (especially if you use tart apples, such as Granny Smiths).
  • Garnish the applesauce with toasted walnuts or pecans.
  • Although we think of applesauce as a condiment, it's also a great everyday dessert. You can also serve it on pancakes, instead of syrup.

on 6/21/2008 This is exactly the recipe I was looking for. I don't cook much, but with food prices rising, and looking to reduce the amount of garbage ~ plastic or glass ~ that I produce, I am beginning to do more. But... I don't have "gadgets" like food processors or blenders. Just the basics, and this is a "just the basics" recipe. Excellent! All I need is a potato masher ~ $2 well spent.
