How to Get a Cat Out of a Tree

It is important to remain calm if your kitten or cat gets caught in a tree. She is probably quite freaked out, and you, as the owner, need to help her calm down.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Avoid mass panic. Given time and privacy, the cat will likely find a way down on her own. (Exceptions are if the cat is injured or if she has a leash wrapped around her neck; go to step 4 in those instances.)

  2. Step 2

If several hours have passed, try to lure the cat down by opening a can of her favorite food underneath the tree. Call out her name in a calm, reassuring voice.

  3. Step 3

Lean a wooden ladder up against the tree near the cat so she can climb down. Leave her alone with the ladder for at least 15 minutes so she can climb down on her own.

  4. Step 4

If the cat is too freaked out to use the ladder, put on work gloves and a thick coat to protect yourself and climb up the ladder to retrieve her. Make sure the ladder is stable before you climb it.

  5. Step 5

Grab the cat by the nape of the neck to reduce your chances of getting scratched and to induce calmness in the cat.

  6. Step 6

If your efforts only send the cat farther up the tree, call an animal shelter or a local humane society. A professional animal handler can rescue the cat quite quickly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not leave the cat stuck in the tree overnight. She'll be terrified and might fall victim to a night predator such as a raccoon or an owl.
  • If a dog has chased the cat up the tree, make sure he is removed from the premises so the cat feels secure enough to climb down.

on 4/27/2009 Our cat was in a 30 foot pine tree and couldn't figure out how to get down. She was scared. We tried coaxing her with food. She came down about a foot. Finally, my husband cut down the tree. He did what was a "soft" fall. It fell slower than a hard fall. You do it by cutting a wedge (V shaped) about 1/3 into the trunk on the side where you want it to fall down. (Trees do not like to fall against their lean, unless you have a rope on them) Remove the wedge. About 2 - 4" above the wedge, on the opposite side, start cutting into the tree. The tree just begins to fall and let it fall into its own weight. He had to push the tree a little to get it started. It worked! The cat hung on and jumped just before it hit the ground. She was fine! She is not in the house resting after being up there for 24 hours or more.

on 1/8/2009 the very best way to get a large not to friendly cat down from a 60 ft pine tree!! find the cats favorite person usually the one that feeds it. get very close to the bottom of the tree and pat on the tree the cat can feel the vib and call in the same way you would before feeding . even have its plate and some food to pour and shake arounfd in it . my cat backed down this with just my mother alone after being up for 5 days and we had tried many things. you need only one person with its food and some patience. it took her alone about 20 min. the cat is fine all but some tree sap and injured feet.

on 10/17/2008 My cat was stuck in a tree for 7 days. The tree was about 30 feet and the biggest ladder I had was 20 feet. I climbed up the ladder with some food and it never came down. All it did was cry. I called multiple tree services and finally got one. The guy had to use a truck with a bucket ,and when he got up to him, he ran further to the end of the tree, and somehow managed to get him. It was $180, but well worth it. My cat wouldn't budge and if it wasnt for the tree guy my cat would have died.
