How to Use a Pay Phone

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Find a pay phone. Look in gas stations, restaurants and on street corners.

  2. Step 2

    Pick up the receiver.

  3. Step 3

    Put coins into the coin slot or dial phone card access number, then card number. If dialing a long-distance number, dial "1" plus the number and wait to hear how many coins to deposit.

  4. Step 4

    Dial the phone number if you have not already.

  5. Step 5

    Wait for the phone to ring.

  6. Step 6

    When you are finished with your call, hang up the phone.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have trouble making your call, dial '0' for the operator.
  • If you need to find a local phone number, dial 411.
  • Pay phones are often located near the restrooms in restaurants and bars.
  • Cell phones are an inexpensive and sanitary alternative.
  • Pay phones do not accept pennies.

on 11/22/2005 If you don't have any change, you can still make a local or long distance call if you have a calling card. Just dial the toll-free number as you would from home. Do this knowing you will be charged significantly more than the usual 35 cents for a local call.
