How to Pack for a Trip to Atlanta

Atlanta has four distinct seasons, but its year-round climate is temperate. Pack dressy casual clothes to blend in with the locals.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Carry-on Bags
  • Garment Bags
  • Luggage Sets
  • Travel Clothes
  • Walking Shoes
  • Backpacks
  • Duffel Bags
  1. Step 1

Check the weather forecast for your intended dates of travel. Atlanta occasionally goes sub-freezing in winter or boils under the southern sun; otherwise it's common to enjoy a park in January or August. Summers can get humid, so plan accordingly.

  2. Step 2

Pack business attire appropriate to your line of work. Choose lighter-weight materials for the summer months. Women wear hose year-round.

  3. Step 3

Take casual clothes with a dressy edge for taking in the sights and spending time visiting friends. Khakis, a blouse or button-down shirt and polished leather loafers can take you from day to evening in style. Comfortable shoes are a must if you plan on a lot of walking.

  4. Step 4

Take a coat and a pair of gloves when visiting in winter. Pack clothes made of lightweight fabrics like cotton and linen to keep cool during summer visits.

  5. Step 5

Bring sweaters for easy layering any time of the year.

  6. Step 6

Remember black will hide dirt and absorb heat; white and ivory will betray dirt but keep you cool.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring a carry-on bag that includes all necessities you might need in case your luggage goes astray: a change of clothes, all medications, spare contact lenses or glasses, all forms of money and any important documents.
  • Pack to accommodate your needs. Leave superfluous items at home.
  • Always pack suits in a garment bag to avoid excess wrinkles and misshapen garments post-flight.

on 4/3/2006 Atlanta is so humid, if you go in the winter and its supposed to be in the mid 60's, plan for it to feel hotter because of the humidity. Also, bring lots of bug spray because the mosquitoes will eat you up.

on 1/31/2006 Atlanta is a very pet-friendly city. Consider bringing your pooch for lots of park recreation. Forget hosiery in the summer, most offices are business casual. Evenings call for sexy, city wear, such as tea length sun dresses and gorgeous shoes to dance the night away! Pack a great pair of walking shoes for shopping in the fashion and antique districts.

on 11/22/2005 If you're traveling to Atlanta in the winter months, don't forget to pack a small umbrella and a light jacket.

I disagree with the hose advice. Women don't wear pantyhose much at all here unless they're in a very conservative workplace or it's a dressy event.

on 11/22/2005 If you don't like the weather in Georgia - wait 10 minutes, it will change. Seasons don't apply to the Atlanta area, pack accordingly.

on 11/22/2005 Forget wearing hose in the summertime. The temperature averages between 85-100 in the summer months, and keeping cool is a must. Black fabric may hide stains, but it makes the wearer very hot.
