How to Replace a Broken Towel Rod

If the weight of your son's soggy beach towel snapped a towel rod in two, you don't need to buy a whole new unit. Instead, you can simply replace the rod. You can even ask the culprit to help--or to do it himself.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Replacement Rod
  • Small Flathead Screwdriver

Step1
Loosen the setscrews--the slotted screw to one side of each bracket--with a small flathead screwdriver (the kind that comes with an eyeglass-repair kit or a computer-repair kit).
Step2
Gently remove the unit from the wall.
Step3
Remove and discard the broken rod.
Step4
Place the new rod into the brackets.
Step5
Place the unit back on the wall hardware.
Step6
Hold the unit in place while tightening the setscrews.

Tips & Warnings

  • To keep the tiny setscrews from disappearing, don't unscrew them all the way. Remove the unit with the setscrews loosened but still in place.

on 9/2/2007 What if the towel rod you are trying to repair doesn't have set screws? I have no idea how it was installed without them but there aren't any and now I have to re-install it. Any ideas?
