How to Walk in a Wedding Dress

With a little practice - and the right shoes - you can glide down the aisle with grace and elegance.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Buy a dress that fits you well.
Step2
Shop for comfortable pumps, stacked heels, flats or slippers. Avoid high heels.
Step3
Scuff the soles of those slippery new shoes using sandpaper or a kitchen knife.
Step4
Maintain good posture - head high and shoulders back! This way, the dress hangs on you correctly instead of getting in your way.
Step5
Grasp the sides of your dress and pull them up a bit when climbing stairs.
Step6
Bustle the train with hooks, snaps or buttons - if you don't have a detachable train - so that you can move around at the reception.
Step7
Slip on that dress and shoes, and practice walking and dancing at home. Get a feel for how the dress fits and moves.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider purchasing cushioned insoles for extra walking comfort.

on 8/8/2006 See if you can find a pair of white/ivory shoes that you already own and know to be comfortable and trustworthy for your big day. If that cannot be done (due to discontinuation) look for something by the same company that made your most comfortable heels.

on 11/22/2005 I also got married outside, in a semi-formal setting. My dress was long, so no one could see my shoes anyway. I (and all of the bridesmaids) wore blue (something blue for me) suede shoes. It was *such* a fun touch! (Guess what our attendant's first dance was?!?!) Also, I had a FABULOUS idea that my sister is using for her wedding (in 4 weeks!). She has a disability, so walking in her (very) heavy dress all day will tire her unnecessarily (it's a VERY formal two-piece dress). For her reception, she had a pair of white satin pants made so that she can dance the night away without worrying about tripping! Cool, huh?

on 11/22/2005 I like the idea of going barefoot, but since my reception will be indoors, it isn't an option [unfortunately!]. So, I'm planning on purchasing white ballet slippers, or if I can't find those, I'll use regular, cheap white terri-cloth slippers.

on 11/22/2005 Be comfortable. Why spend lots of money for shoes you're only gonna wear for a few hours at the most? I like tennis shoes. I am getting a pair of plain white canvas shoes and dressing them up with lace and glitter.

on 8/8/2006 Scholl's party feet are a lifesaver. They come in gel insoles, heel shields, even slingback strips. You can also get blister pads that you can put in areas of your shoes that bug you the most. The best part of it all is that they are
a) reusable and
b) washable.
They are great for any time, being a bridesmaid or a bride and dancing all night!
