  • Lumber
  • Drafting Compasses
  • Phillips Screwdrivers
  • T Squares
  • Carpenter's Glue
  • Carpenter's Pencils
  • Chalk Line
  • Combination Squares
  • Combination Squares
  • Electric Screwdrivers
  • Handsaws
  • Sandpaper
  • Slotted Screwdrivers
  • Table Saws
  • Sandpaper
  1. Step 1

    Select a pattern. A good pattern will have the amount of lumber needed for the project and a list of tools and supplies needed. A pattern with actual-size drawings is the best for a beginner.

  2. Step 2

    Purchase tools needed to complete project. If you are buying for someone who already does some woodworking, you might check with a family member on tools already on hand.

  3. Step 3

    Include a gift certificate for lumber from a favorite lumber store if this is a gift.

  4. Step 4

    Add a few extras - carpenter's pencil, chalk line, T-square, sandpaper, level, compass, handsaw, wood glue, Phillips-head and flat-head screwdrivers.

  5. Step 5

    Include paints, brushes and wood sealer if needed to the complete project.

  6. Step 6

    Present the gift in a toolbox.
