Using a ski lift properly is key to avoiding embarrassing moments.

From Quick Guide: Skiing
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ski Lift Tickets
  • Ski Boots
  • Ski Clothing
  • Ski Poles
  1. Step 1

    Stow any loose items.

  2. Step 2

Put on your hat, gloves and goggles.

  3. Step 3

Grasp your poles, one in each hand, but don't put on the wrist straps.

  4. Step 4

Point the ends of the poles toward the outside of the chair, away from the other passenger. Hold your poles between your knees if you are between two people.

  5. Step 5

Hold the pole tips high, so they won't catch on snow at the lift station.

  6. Step 6

Point the tips of the skis upward at a gentle angle, so they will not catch the ground, as you near the mound of snow at the lift station.

  7. Step 7

Hold the bar beside the lift seat for balance. Relax your legs and prepare to stand up normally.

  8. Step 8

Survey the area in front of the lift for obstacles you'll want to avoid.

  9. Step 9

Stand up after the chair has passed over the top of the mound. Avoid pushing off the chair too strenuously.

  10. Step 10

Glide a safe distance away from the chairlift area before pausing to collect yourself.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stow your poles as you sit on the lift by sliding them under one of your legs. Give yourself plenty of time to prepare your poles and position yourself before getting off the lift.
  • Avoid stopping directly in front of the lift.
  • Avoid dropping anything from the lift.
  • Skiing is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
