  1. Step 1

Handwrite the note. It adds an invaluable personal touch.

  2. Step 2

Use letterhead, or personalized stationery if you have it.

  3. Step 3

Use your assistant's first name if your relationship dictates it.

  4. Step 4

Spell out exactly what you're thanking your assistant for: creativity, performing over and above the call of duty, working overtime under stressful conditions, or simply being invaluable.

  5. Step 5

End it on a pleasant and upbeat note, of course.

  6. Step 6

Sign it with some informality. Appropriate closings include "thanks again," "gratefully" and "best."

  7. Step 7

Use your first name if you have used your assistant's first name in the salutation.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your assistant has performed a great favor or has made an amazing contribution, consider sending flowers.
  • Leave the note on the recipient's desk, or in a work mailbox. The U.S. mail is another option.
  • If your assistant sees you later and doesn't mention the note, perhaps he or she is simply shy or self-conscious.
