Iguanas enjoy being outside, because they love to bask in the sunlight. The safest way to take your iguana outside is to walk it on a leash.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Iguana Leashes
  1. Step 1

Choose an iguana leash that is made of sturdy material. Leather and nylon are best.

  2. Step 2

Be sure the leash comes with a harness that will fit around the spikes on the iguana's back and neck.

  3. Step 3

Look for a leash with an adjustable cinch so that you can gently but firmly secure your iguana.

  4. Step 4

Opt for a pivoting safety clasp. This will permit you to attach the leash to your belt loop, or permit you to tie your lizard safely around a branch to enjoy the sunshine.

  5. Step 5

Look for a leash that is easy to wash.

  6. Step 6

Consider a leash in bright colors, so that it is easy to locate.

  7. Step 7

Understand that you should not have to pay more than $5 for an iguana leash.

on 2/25/2006 Iguana leashes can cause spike damage and suffocation. Harnesses should be used to protect your iguana and prevent it from escaping and inflicting injuries. It would be best to put your harness on the iguana at a young age so it will be use to it. Introduce your iguana to new people, if it starts getting aggressive put it back. If he is frightened, keep him out, but limit your time. You don't want to make him more scared, neither do you want him to think he is in danger for his life. He can and may bite as an adult and cause injury too, so start while he is young.

on 11/22/2005 leashes are dangerous. i dont care how well made they appear. they cause internal damage as well as external.
people who use leashes anyways , walk thier animal on the ground. since an iguana *smells* through its jacob organ , it is flicking its tongue on the ground every other step.
this is a great way to introduce bacteria into your iguana, as well as on your iguana. the ground is DIRTY

on 11/22/2005 I have had an Iguana for 2 1/2 years (since she was 1 year old) and have found through her growth, a leather mask style with a cinch cord is better than any other leash I have tried. The front legs must fit through the holes easily, as to not harm or discomfort her. I have made all of her harnesses from scratch after the purchase of the first one, which I used for the pattern.

on 11/22/2005 Iguana leashes can be good if you use them properly. Do not use leashes made for other animals. Don't expect your iguana to walk like a dog on the leash. The leash should only be used to keep your iguana from running away, not for walking it down the street.

on 11/22/2005 I'm not a fan of ig. leashes due to spine damage and risk of strangulation. Iguanas should be kept under close supervision when taken outside. Put them in a large, secured cage with both sunny and shady sides and a min. outdoor temp. of 75.
