How to Make Devil's Food Cake

Devil's food cake is named for its reddish-brown color, which comes from the reaction of the baking soda with the cocoa. Serves 12. Check Related eHows for some good frosting recipes.

  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 3/4 c. sugars
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 c. shortenings
  • 1 tsp. vanilla

  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 3/4 c. sugars
  • 1 1/3 c. cold water
  • 2 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 c. shortenings
  • 3 eggs
  1. Step 1

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Step 2

    Grease and lightly flour two 9-inch cake pans. Set aside.

  3. Step 3

    Combine flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt in a mixing bowl. Set aside.

  4. Step 4

    Beat shortening with an electric hand mixer on medium speed in a large mixing bowl for 30 seconds.

  5. Step 5

    Add sugar and vanilla. Beat until well combined.

  6. Step 6

    Add eggs one at a time and beat well after each addition.

  7. Step 7

    Add dry flour mixture and water alternately to wet mixture, beating on low speed, until just combined.

  8. Step 8

    Pour batter into prepared pans and bake 35 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.

  9. Step 9

    Cool cakes on a wire rack for 10 minutes.

  10. Step 10

    Remove cakes from pans and cool thoroughly on wire rack.

  11. Step 11

    Frost with desired frosting.

on 8/10/2006 Try replacing the water with one cup evaporated milk mixed with one tablespoon of white vinegar.
