How to Soften Hardened Sugars or Cookies

Brown sugar, honey, syrup and even cookies have a habit of hardening despite storage in airtight containers. Here are some tricks to soften them up.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Apple
  • Bread
  • Small Pan
  • Airtight Container(s)
  • Microwave
  • Small Pan
  • Paper Towel
  1. Step 1

    Place brown sugar in an airtight container with one or two slices of bread. Leave overnight.

  2. Step 2

    Microwave brown sugar or honey in an open container. Cover with a damp paper towel and turn on high. Turn or stir well every 30 seconds until the sugar or honey has softened.

  3. Step 3

    Place the container of crystallized honey or syrup in a small pan of simmering water. Heat until smooth.

  4. Step 4

    Seal hard cookies in an airtight container with apple wedges or bread slices. Set aside for one or two days.

Tips & Warnings
  • Sugars may harden again, but the softening process can be repeated as many times as needed.

on 11/22/2005 I store my opened brown sugar in a resealable gallon bag in the fridge. It stays soft and you don't have to wait for the bread to soften it.

In a pinch, I have also used a cheese grater when I needed soft brown sugar that had gone hard
