Brown sugar, honey, syrup and even cookies have a habit of hardening despite storage in airtight containers. Here are some tricks to soften them up.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Apple
  • Bread
  • Small Pan
  • Airtight Container(s)
  • Microwave
  • Paper Towel

Step1
Place brown sugar in an airtight container with one or two slices of bread. Leave overnight.
Step2
Microwave brown sugar or honey in an open container. Cover with a damp paper towel and turn on high. Turn or stir well every 30 seconds until the sugar or honey has softened.
Step3
Place the container of crystallized honey or syrup in a small pan of simmering water. Heat until smooth.
Step4
Seal hard cookies in an airtight container with apple wedges or bread slices. Set aside for one or two days.

Tips & Warnings

  • Sugars may harden again, but the softening process can be repeated as many times as needed.

on 11/22/2005 I store my opened brown sugar in a resealable gallon bag in the fridge. It stays soft and you don't have to wait for the bread to soften it.

In a pinch, I have also used a cheese grater when I needed soft brown sugar that had gone hard
