  • Tape Christmas cards onto the bottom side of the handrail as they arrive.

  • Hook candy canes here and there into a holly garland that spirals around the handrail.

  • Add bows made of red-velvet or metallic-gold ribbon. Here and there attach Christmas ornaments of the same color as the ribbon.

  • Place tiny wrapped-and-ribboned boxes along the garland.

  • Add self-adhesive gold or silver stars. A sprinkling in various sizes is especially pretty.

  • Light the garland with small twinkle lights intertwined with the garland, or place icicle lights so they hang below the handrail.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have an active household with pets or children, you can also place items on the edges of each open step on your stairway. Festive looks could include a series of toy Christmas soldiers, angel figures, or teddy bears dressed in red bows.
