Step 1
Choose angels of a similar style or mood for your mantel display: whimsical, formal, country, whatever. This looks better than a jumble of different types.
-
Step 2
Keep colors subdued, minimal and mostly monochromatic. We tend to envision angels in soft colors such as beige and ivory, plus a metallic tone, usually gold.
-
Step 3
Set out a compatible mantel cloth. For instance, choose quilt batting dusted with glitter, or a glitzy metallic fabric for a more formal angel ambience; choose tan burlap or unbleached muslin for a more homespun look.
-
Step 4
Place a single angel or a multitude of the heavenly hosts on the mantel, but be sure there's a focal point. For instance, you could set the tallest angel in the center and flank it with crystal candlestick holders.
-
Step 5
Give your angels a celestial feel with a sparkling sprinkling of stars above and behind them. Adhesive gold stars, phosphorescent stars or faux jewels should do the trick.
-
Step 6
Edge the mantel in garlands, perhaps metallic gold or white. An edging of white feathers is also in keeping with your angels' wings.
-
Step 7
Accent the garland with fitting Christmas tree ornaments such as gold harps, trumpets and simple spheres. Or you could make tiny halos from pipe cleaners and embellish them with glitter.
-
Step 8
Frame the entire display with appropriately colored satin ribbon (about 1 inch wide) suspended from a nail (hide its head with a star or shiny brass button) centered on the fireplace or wall about 2 feet above the mantel. Drape three to five lengths of ribbon over the nail (secure with hot glue) so it makes an inverted V shape, and let it trail over the edge of the mantel. Lightly secure the ends with glue or adhesive dough.

on 11/22/2005 I use tulle and clear lights, with a white cord as a base for the display. I make a "tube" out of 3-4 yards of tulle and lay the lights inside. Let the tulle "billow" up around the angels.

on 11/22/2005 Weave small white lights in between your angels. Cover this with fiber fill. When lit it looks like highlighted clouds. (Colored lights can be used, too, for a whimsical look.)
