A Christmas mantel can have informal decor that's casual, kitschy or childlike. Here are some ways to create a fun one.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Christmas-package Type Ribbons
  • Butcher Papers
  • Sequins
  • Clear Glass Vases
  • Craft Paints
  • Glues
  • Green Spray Paints
  • Multicolor Christmas Light Bulbs
  • Pillar Candles
  • Wrapped Peppermints
  • Glass Bowl
  • Glass Bowl
  • Adhesive Dough
  • Construction Paper
  • Kraft Papers
  • Markers
  • Strong Adhesive Tape
  • Two-sided Tape
  • Self-adhesive Stars
  • Sequins
  • Markers
  1. Step 1

Make paper doll-style cutouts from holiday wrapping paper, brown kraft paper or butcher paper in a length that will hug the edge of your mantel. Or go longer if you want create a swag from the cutouts. The cutouts could also be snowflakes, snowmen, angels or gingerbread men. Embellish with markers or paint if desired, and attach to the edge of the mantel with double-sided tape or adhesive dough.

  2. Step 2

Create a quick, easy centerpiece by putting a tall pillar candle in the center of a plain, clear glass bowl or vase and then adding a nest of Christmas light bulbs (the big outdoor kind) in many colors.

  3. Step 3

Craft a Christmas tree for an alternative centerpiece design. Fold all pages down from the top of a magazine to form a 45-degree angle, and a Christmas tree with a flat back (which takes up less mantel space) will emerge; spray-paint it dark green and, if desired, add adhesive stars.

  4. Step 4

Flank the centerpiece with matching pillar candles if there's enough room on your mantel.

  5. Step 5

Finish the decor with a confetti/streamer flouris; spiral out gift-wrap ribbons of various lengths and snake the mantel with a paper chain of red and green construction paper. Add wrapped peppermints and a scattering of sequins to the mantel, too, if they'll show.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you craft a magazine Christmas tree, note that a magazine without a squared-off spine creates a more stable tree. If your tree is off-balance, you may wish to anchor it with glue, adhesive dough or strong tape.
  • Don't let the paper cutouts hang so low that they are a fire hazard. They should stop several inches above the opening in your chimney.
