How to Fix a Zippo That Was Filled With the Wrong Fluid

Fill your Zippo lighter with the appropriate fluid to ensure maximum safety and usability.

A Zippo lighter is ideal for adverse conditions such as excessive wind since it has a chimney to protect the flame from blowing out. Zippos cost more than disposable lighters, but are worth the investment because they are refillable and the flints are replaceable, ensuring you never need to replace the lighter. For maximum safety, you should always fill your Zippo lighter with butane fluid. If you accidentally fill it with the wrong fluid, you should empty the wrong fluid out before trying to light it.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to a well ventilated area, preferably outside.

    • 2

Flip the lid on the lighter back to open it.

    • 3

Press and hold the butane release button, located under the flint wheel. Do not press down on the flint wheel, just the butane release button underneath it since you're not trying to light the lighter, just empty it.

    • 4

Turn the lighter upside down and insert the tip of the lighter fluid canister into the bottom fill hole. Squeeze the butane canister two to three times and hold for five seconds each time to adequately fill the lighter.

    • 5

Wait two minutes before lighting your Zippo to give the gas adequate time to evaporate into the lighter.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always remain in a well ventilated area when working with gases and flames. Point the lighter away from the face when lighting to minimize risk of injury.
