How to Make an Electronic Dog Whistle
Dog whistles work by emitting an ultrasonic frequency that dogs can hear, but humans cannot. One alternative to the traditional whistle is the electronic dog whistle, which emits ultrasonic frequencies without the limitations of human lungs. Electronic dog whistles can be used to quell barking, discourage dog attacks and for training purposes. Does this Spark an idea?

- Digital playback device with PC connection
- High-frequency rated tweeter speaker
- PC

Connect your digital recorder or playback device to a small tweeter speaker that has been rated for up to at least 40,000 hertz. Make sure that the speaker's input plug is connected to the device's output or headphone jack.

Obtain the high-frequency "whistle" sound clips that will be used in your electronic whistle. High-frequency pitches are available for download online, or can be created using an audio editor program. Most dog whistles are in the range of 20 to 53 kilohertz.

Connect the device to the computer containing your high frequency sounds using the digital device's PC cable. Remove all other sound files from the device's memory drive and upload the sound file or files you want the electronic whistle to play. When the upload is complete, disconnect the device. The device will now act as an electronic dog whistle, starting when the play/pause button is pressed and stopping when it is pressed again.

Tips & Warnings
Some smart phones have applications available that allow them to act as an improvised electronic dog whistle. This option still requires the use of a high-frequency speaker however.
High-frequency tweeters are available at specialty sound stores or from online custom speaker retailers.
Avoid excessive or prolonged exposure to ultrasonic frequencies, as they may be damaging to the hearing.
