DIY: Cutting Speed Calculations
Cutting speed or surface speed is an important aspect in machining and is defined as the speed or rate that an object travels beyond the cutting edge of the tool. Knowing the cutting speed is important because it relates to cut quality and and accuracy. Cutting speed also helps enhance productivity and tool life or finds a balance between the two. The diameter of the cutter and the machine's RPMs will help you calculate cutting speed.

1
Calculate the machine's cutting speed by using the following formula:
Cutting Speed (V) = Diameter (D) x RPM (N) x 3.14 / 60,000
-
2
Assume the cutting speed the diameter (D) in mm is 100. The RPM (N) is 20,000.

3
Multiply diameter 100 by 20,000 and the sum by 3.14. The total answer is 6,280,000. Divide the total by 60,000. The answer is 104.67 meters/second.
