How to Bind Placemats

Many place mats, especially holiday themed versions, come pre-printed and quilted in panels. To make the place mats, you simply need to cut them from the panels and bind them up. You can make binding from scrap fabric, but it is easier to simply buy pre-made binding from the fabric store. Using this quick and easy way of making place mats means you can whip out enough for an entire table in just one evening. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the place mat on the table with the top side facing up.

    • 2

Unfold the binding along one side and lay it on top of the place mat. The cut edge of the binding should line up with the cut edge of the place mat. Pin it in place along one side of the place mat.

    • 3

Sew the binding in place where you pinned it. It may seem odd, since you aren't covering the cut edge, but don't worry; this is correct. Stop sewing 1/4 inch from the corner. If you have an oval or circle place mat, continue sewing around the entire mat.

    • 4

Pull up the binding away from the corner. If you are going turn a right corner, pull the binding to the left. Pull it back all the way, then pull it back to the right and lay it where it needs to go, on the new side. This creates a fold in the corner. Pin it down, along with the new side of the binding.

    • 5

Sew along the side, starting in the corner. Sew over the fold you made; this creates a clean binding line.

    • 6

Continue pinning and sewing until you get back to the beginning of the binding. Fold the binding in on itself and sew the end down.

    • 7

Pull the binding over the cut edge of the place mat and press flat. Pin the binding to the back of the place mat; do not unfold this side. You should have a folded edge laying against the back.

    • 8

Hand sew the back of the binding in place using a small whipstitch.

    • 9

      Trim any excess strings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove the pins as you get to them with the sewing machine. Running over them can cause your needle to break.
